Building High-Impact Peer Facilitators Through Experiential Learning

LSF Global – Leadership & Innovation Development

Executive Summary

A leading vocational and higher education institution sought to strengthen the facilitation, communication, and mentoring capabilities of its peer leaders. As student mentors increasingly play a critical role in supporting learning, engagement, and development initiatives, the institution recognized the importance of equipping them with practical facilitation skills that would enable them to confidently guide discussions, encourage participation, and foster meaningful learning experiences.

To address this need, a highly interactive Virtual Instructor-Led Training (vILT) program was designed and delivered. The program focused on developing practical skills in active listening, effective communication, questioning techniques, briefing, facilitation, participation management, and constructive feedback. Through a blend of experiential activities, peer learning, reflection exercises, and facilitation practice, participants gained tools and confidence that could be immediately applied in mentoring and leadership situations.

The program generated excellent results, with participants reporting high levels of satisfaction and a strong intention to apply the learning in real-life situations. Most notably, the program achieved a 4.9/5 rating for workplace application, demonstrating the practical relevance of the learning experience.

The Challenge

Educational institutions increasingly rely on student leaders and peer mentors to support learning communities, facilitate engagement activities, and guide fellow students through important academic and personal development experiences.

However, while these student leaders often possess enthusiasm and technical knowledge, many have limited experience in:

Without formal facilitation training, peer leaders may struggle to create engaging learning environments and maximize participation among their peers. The institution therefore identified a need for a structured development intervention that would help participants become more confident, effective, and impactful facilitators.

Program Objectives

The program was designed with several key objectives:

1. Develop Facilitation Confidence

Help participants feel comfortable leading discussions, activities, and group interactions.

2. Strengthen Communication Skills

Build effective communication habits that support collaboration and engagement.

3. Improve Active Listening

Enable participants to listen more attentively, understand diverse perspectives, and foster deeper conversations.

4. Enhance Questioning Techniques

Provide tools for asking powerful questions that encourage participation, reflection, and critical thinking.

5. Build Feedback Skills

Develop the ability to give and receive feedback in a constructive and supportive manner.

6. Create Sustainable Learning Behaviours

Provide frameworks and learning resources that participants could continue using after the training session.
